Introduction to map reading

The main maps used in England today are published by the British Ordnance Survey Department. This government department, established in 1791, was formed to prepare maps of Britain in a uniform manner. The first maps the Department published were on the scale of 1 inch to a mile. This was the most popular scale in general use, but has now been replaced by the slightly larger scale 1:50,000 (approximately 1¼ " to the mile).

This chapter will deal with the preparation and understanding of the layout of the map, before dealing with the translation of the map at Chapter 2. While reading this chapter, you should refer to the Ordnance Survey (OS) Map Sheet (MS) 99 of Northallerton & Ripon.
